UNIVERSITY OF ARTS- CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS
Fashion Styling Fundamentals by KRISTINE KILTY
STEP 1: CREATE A MOOD BOARD
Harmonious arrangement of images, colours, textures, fonts to be used as a reference to the overall styling, poses, location, etc.
This mood board was created by the team I was in. Before preparing the mood board, we all came to agreement that clothing would be black; accessories and makeup could be colourful; the hair would be wavy. We decided to give a strong and attractive mood/character to our model. We -3 of us- had one mood board but each worked on a separate styling.
STEP 2: SOURCE GARMENTS
After finalizing our mood board, we all went out to source garments and accessories for our stylings. As we had to use clothing in black and accessories in colour, I began to do my research of them in that direction. But, I realized that what I was looking for – black dresses, red bags, different shoes, colourful earrings…- was quite boring and did not fit anything I had defined as creative.
So, what did I do in this case?
I decided to look for;
-some black dresses with transparent hoodies
-no shoes but colourful socks
-golden & red earrings
-some ribbons to give some vibration to the style
After that,
I photographed everything I found which comply with my criterias above.
I had just half a day to find all these things and get ready for the fashion shoot. To think more clearly I decided to take short break and have a coffee to plan which one to buy.
-Also as a side note, don’t forget that you can borrow anything from your own or a friend’s wardrobe & refund the clothing or some accessories you have bought.
I realized that I couldn’t find the earrings, bracelets, rings as I had imagined; so that, I added up some features to the things I had found.
STEP 3: PREPARATION OF THE FULL STYLE
The clothes from a Turkish brand called NU
Red socks from Primark
Triangular-shaped earrings from Forever 21
Pink ribbon, my own
Golden ribbon from Flying Tiger
The socks- removed red ribbons added pink and golden ribbons
Earrings- added some pieces from the ribbons which I got on the socks
Accessories for hands and arms- pink and golden ribbons
STEP 4: COMMUNICATE WITH THE MODEL AND PHOTOGRAPHER
After having prepared the model for the shoot, I talked both to the photographer and model about the characterization and poses.
*Ask the model if she is good in your styling, the atmosphere and if she needs anything.
*Talk about your moodboard with the photographer to get an exact result and don’t restrict the photographer’s movements by crossing the area.
